Smart Water Monitoring Devices
A leaking supply line, broken pipe, or failing water heater can cause substantial damage before anyone realizes there is a problem. When water continues flowing while you’re at work, asleep, or away on vacation, the damage can spread beyond the plumbing to flooring, cabinets, walls, and personal belongings.
In our last newsletter, we discussed recognizing water heater problems before they become bigger issues. This month, we’re looking at another way to protect your home: smart water monitoring and automatic shutoff devices, such as a Moen Flo.
How Does a Smart Water Shutoff Work?
Moen Flo is installed directly into your home’s main water supply line. It monitors water flowing through the device and learns your household’s normal usage patterns. Once its initial learning period is complete, it can identify unusual activity, send an alert, and automatically shut off the water when it detects a potential problem.
The system also performs automatic tests that check for pressure loss, which can help identify small leaks that might otherwise go unnoticed. Through the app, homeowners can view water usage and turn the water supply on or off remotely.
Why Consider Installing A Smart Device?
A smart shutoff adds several useful features to your home’s plumbing:
Automatic response. If a potential leak is detected, the device can stop the incoming water supply, helping limit how much water continues escaping.
Alerts when you’re away. Phone notifications can let you know something needs attention even when you aren’t home to see or hear it.
A better understanding of water usage. Monitoring can help bring unusual consumption to your attention so you can investigate the cause.
Added peace of mind. Whether you’re leaving for a weekend or simply heading to work, knowing your plumbing is being monitored can make one less thing to worry about.
Many insurance companies will off a discount to your monthly premium if a device is installed.
No device can prevent every leak or eliminate all water damage. However, detecting a problem and limiting the continued flow of water can make a meaningful difference.
How Is This Different from a Water Alarm?
A basic water alarm sits near a potential trouble spot, such as a water heater or washing machine, and sounds when water reaches its sensor. Some models also send phone notifications. These devices can be helpful, but a standalone alarm does not stop the water supply.
A smart shutoff combines monitoring with the ability to close a valve. That added response is especially useful when nobody is home to act on an alarm. Separate leak sensors can also complement a shutoff system by monitoring specific locations.
What Does Installation Require?
Installation involves fitting the device into the main water line, with enough room for the unit and future service. Moen Flo also needs a nearby electrical outlet and a suitable WiFi connection for its connected features.
The plumbing layout matters, including the location of existing shutoff valves, pressure regulators, and any separate irrigation or fire sprinkler lines. We can review your setup and determine an appropriate installation location.
After setup, Flo goes through a learning period before its usage-based alerts and automatic shutoff protection become active. Completing that process and understanding the app’s settings are part of getting the system ready to protect your home.
